Pool Closing Checklist

Close before the first freeze — usually when daytime temps stay below 65°F. A proper close prevents ice damage and makes spring opening far easier.

1. Clean and balance first

  • Brush and vacuum the whole pool. Clean skimmer and pump baskets.
  • Run the filter 24 hours so the water is clear going into winter.
  • Balance: alkalinity 80–120 ppm, pH 7.2–7.6, calcium 200–400 ppm.
  • Shock in the evening, circulate overnight, then add a winter algaecide and stain preventer per label.

2. Lower the water and winterize plumbing

  • Mesh cover: drain to just below the skimmer. Solid cover: about 6 inches below the tile line. Check your cover manual.
  • Drain the pump, filter, heater, and chlorinator. Remove drain plugs and store them in the pump basket so you find them in spring.
  • Blow out or drain return lines and skimmer lines, then install winterizing plugs and skimmer guards.
  • Never use antifreeze formulated for cars — only pool-safe products, and only if your manual calls for them.

3. Cover and store

  • Remove ladders, rails, toys, and cleaners. Store them dry.
  • Place air pillows under solid covers to absorb ice expansion.
  • Install the cover taut and secure it — cables, clips, or water bags depending on type.
  • Through winter: pump standing water off the cover, clear leaves, and check tension after storms.

Common closing mistakes

  • Closing a dirty pool: Debris stains and feeds algae all winter.
  • Skipping the balance: Unbalanced water etches plaster and corrodes equipment over months.
  • Forgetting to drain equipment: One freeze can crack a pump housing or filter.

In spring, follow the Pool Opening Checklist to reverse these steps.
