Pool Opening Checklist
Your complete guide to opening your pool safely and efficiently for the swim season.
When to open
- Temperature rule: Open when daytime temps are consistently above 65°F and freezing nights are over.
- Open early: Prevents algae growing under a warm cover.
- Save work: A clean open is far easier than fixing months of neglect.
Week-by-week plan
Week 1: Cover and equipment
- Pump standing water off the cover, sweep off leaves, then remove it.
- Clean the cover, let it dry fully, then fold and store it cool and dry.
- Inspect the pool for cracks, leaks, or loose tiles.
- Reconnect pump, filter, heater, and chlorinator. Lubricate o-rings.
- Remove winter plugs, add water to mid-skimmer level.
Week 2: Clean and filter
- Brush walls, floor, steps, and behind ladders.
- Vacuum thoroughly, then run the filter 24 hours.
- Backwash or clean the filter as needed.
- Shock in the evening and run the pump overnight.
Week 3: Test and balance
- Test pH, alkalinity, calcium, and CYA.
- Adjust in this order: alkalinity (80–120), then pH (7.2–7.6), then calcium, then CYA.
- Wait 6–8 hours between adjustments, then retest.
- Use our Chemical Calculator for exact doses.
Week 4: Final checks
- Bring free chlorine to 1–3 ppm.
- Reinstall ladders, boards, and accessories.
- Test fences, alarms, and covers.
- Swim once water is clear and chlorine is in range.
Mistakes to avoid
- Running the pump dry: Always prime first or you can damage seals.
- Dosing blind: Test before adding chemicals to avoid over-correction.
- Skipping the filter clean: A dirty filter strains the pump and clouds water.
